TBR — a pet peeve of mine!

I have to laugh at a number of bloggers — yes, laugh at them, out loud and with gusto — when they talk about their TBR (to be read) pile. But what they are referring to is, in fact, a factious list they have on Goodreads or Netgalley. And not, I might add, a real, honest to goodness pile of books teetering like the leaning tower of Pisa, on their bedside table.

There is a big difference between a wish list of books you want to read (whether on Goodreads or not) and a pile of bought, borrowed, or stolen books you’ve been sent to review. Having 139 books on your ‘Goodreads/Netgalley’ list doesn’t compare. I have 32 books stacked in my TBR pile, and that’s the smallest it’s been in years!

Please, people, stop talking about lists of books you have yet to beg/steal/buy or borrow as being a TBR pile. It’s not. It’s a wish list.

I don’t even have a TBR pile! On the contrary, my Goodreads TBR list is very long! The books on the list are from all the giveaways I have been entering — adding to your TBR on Goodreads is one of the entry options and I have been participating in many, many, many giveaways!

LOL! That’s one way to acquire a lot of books to read, Veronica. Lots of people use Goodreads to make lots of lists and I can see the appeal. And, there was a time when I would be there, with everyone, doing the same. Now, I want to read rather than make lists. 😉

    Hahaha 😀
I call mine a TBR cuz i thought everyone would know what i refer to, but reading your post, well, i’m not sure anymore.
For me the TBR is a list i keep in order to not forget books i find interesting and eventually might want to read. Maybe i wan’t to read them tomorrow, maybe i want to read them 10 years from now, but just want to have a record of it for now. I actually already own some of these books, so i would call wish list those i don’t own yet.

It’s just me having a hissy fit, Norrie. I was blog hopping yesterday afternoon and to say that nearly every blog was talking about fictitious TBR piles is an understatement. I’m anal when it comes to list making, just as much as any book blogger/lover. And have a Moleskin for different lists: wish list, the to buy list, and the DON’T BUY THESE AUTHORS list! 😉

Doesn’t everyone have one of those lists?

But seriously, I probably should be on Goodreads doing exactly what everyone else is doing (except I can’t be bothered to make yet another set of lists!)
