Today actually feels like a spring day for the first time since, well, last year! The sun is shining brightly, there’s a light breeze, and we’re finally getting into double digits. In fact, these last few weeks the sun has been shining more often than not, which always lifts the spirits. Oh, and one of our Song Sparrows is back this year. We heard him this morning, albeit he starts singing at around 5:30 A.M. just before dawn.
We’re getting use to being woken up by him because it’s so quiet out there these days. What with no traffic or other constant background noise, we can finally hear the birds. I haven’t heard them singing at this time in, well, decades. Maybe as far back as when I was a child, to be honest.
Such is the amount of usual noise going on in our lives. Now, though, with the intervention of Mother Nature, saying we have to stay at home, and be quiet, we can hear Her voice again. And, do you know what? It’s glorious! Never have I been happier to be woken at that eh gawd awful time, than to listen to him serenade us. Well, okay, maybe he’s not singing for us, but a hoped for mate.
Oh, and the sparrows are now nesting in both the little bird house, in the privacy hedge, but also in two spots in the YWCA building opposite. Where the huge electric cables go into the building, there are cowlings over the tops. I guess it’s to stop the worst of the weather getting in. Well, these two cowlings make perfect Sparrow shelters. There are birds flying in and out all day long. I have no idea how many they can get in there, but we’ve started calling them the Sparrow condos. Ha! Ha!
Yes, we’re are happy to sit and stare out the window at meal times, and watch the birds do their thing, unhindered by humans. Though we do worry if they’re getting enough to eat. I sneak wholewheat bread and nuts out to them, though we’re not supposed to feed the wildlife. So sue me already. I ain’t going to stop. These fellows are one of life’s small joys.
Meanwhile, in other news. I had what was a relatively good night for me, last night.
I think this is down to the twin facts I had a half pill before bed of my cholesterol drug, and also, from drinking a ton of liquids through out the day. I’m trying hard to drink at least 2 litres a day, if not more. If it means I pee twice a night, so be it. It’s better than the alternative: Cramp.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to sit by the window, in the sun, like a cat, and watch the birds. Have a great yourselves, where ever you are.
Stay safe and take care.
