One Lovely Blog Award: 7 Random Facts about Alex

So that fab wannabe cowgirl and all round crazy cook, Christina, over at Recipe and a Read, has tagged me in the One Lovely Blog Award. I’m honoured. Thanks Christina. You should stop by if you don’t already, as Christina loves to dish up a recipe with her reviews, and always has some fun blog posts. Oh, and she just revamped her blog with a fresh spring-like look, so go take a look. And not to be outdone, coffee-addict Norrie also nominated me. Ta Sweetie!

So, are you ready to be bored dazzled by 7 Random Facts about Moi? Hey, at my age I’ve done quite a few things, all thanks too

FACT #1 : I was in the military. Yeah, and I survived! Ha! Ha! I did 8 years in the Women’s Royal Air Force, to be exact, as an Air Traffic Controller. Does that fact scare you knowing I was in charge? Well, okay, maybe not in-charge and it was military fighter jets, not passenger flights, that we landed!

FACT #2 : I jumped out of a hovering helicopter over the sea. Not once, or twice, but several times. No, really! See, this one ties in with being in the military. We got to do some really stupid things, like this. But it was all in the interest of teaching Search and Rescue techniques to SARs Crews, and survival (that would be me, bobbing around in frigid waters) — yes, we had survival suits on.

FACT #3 : I was a qualified Netball Referee. See, I bet you never saw that one coming either. Ha! Again, this is the kind of thing you get up to, while in the military. I had to go to London to train and then, had an exam. Yeah, for netball!

FACT #4 : I’ve been to, London, Paris, Rome, Berlin, and New York. Okay, now don’t laugh, as I kid I was fascinated by those glossy perfume ads in magazines that featured these seemingly, exotic cities. So I had this thing about wanting to visit them all, and I did. Thanks Mum!

FACT #5 : Growing up I wanted to be a marine biologist. Yeah, I  know, go figure. It was watching all those TV shows featuring one of my dad’s heroes, Jacque Cousteau, that started it, that and I love the ocean. I’m convinced I’m part mermaid. The water and I are best buddies.

FACT #6 : I love to cook. This one is in homage to Christina who, along with Norrie, nominated me for this Meme. And while I don’t know if I’m as good a cook as Christina, with all her lovely recipes. I do all the cooking and am always trying new things and tweaking recipes to suit my taste buds. I do love me some rich spicy food and love my herbs. I cannot imagine life without bay leaves.

FACT #7 : I still have my childhood teddy bear. It’s a small Steiff Bear. And if the apartment was burning down, that would be the first thing I would grab and save. My dad bought it for me when he found out my mum was pregnant with me. There is nothing more precious to me.

So there you have it, 7 random things you didn’t know about me. My thanks to Christina and Norrie for the nominations. And, talking of which, as I have no idea who has already done this one, I won’t nominate anyone specifically, and leave it up to you to play along, as you’re all nominated!

So, i dunno why or how, but i only just got a notification about this post… curious

I remember you mentioned the military involvement, but didn’t know you did air traffic control. That’s so cool! There was a time when i flirted with the idea. Not military tho. But didn’t like the fact that they could move people anywhere. I’m a proper hermit, and prefer my surroundings to be constant.

Your teddy is super cute . I think my mum still has some of mine somewhere. My first ever toy was a doll thing my mum made. Half knitted, half textile thing.

Sounds like the Ether Gremlins stole your notification, then spat it back up! 😉 Or maybe the CIA had it? Who knows …

Yeah, I come from a military background and, well, it was the easy route to free travel, although the cost was being on call 24/7. So you probably were wise not to sign-up. Though it also paid for me to get my degree, so I can’t complain.

Ah, my bear is my treasure. I love Bear, he and I have been through the wars together. And I bet your mum still has a horde of stuff. I know my mum had her own hidden cache. 😀

Nope, I wouldn’t have guessed many of those – you’ve had an adventurous life!
I love that you still have that Teddy Bear. And I wanted to be a Marine Biologist, too! I did become a biologist, I guess, but you wouldn’t know it now. 🙂

I was lucky to have a travelling family, Naomi, which set me up for doing a lot of my own travelling. And the rest just kind of slotted in from there.

Oh, and you too? There seems to be a few of us who wanted to be marine biologists. I too did sciences, and did what was called Earth Sciences, in the end, because it did a little of everything. It was a foundation course for diversification. I kind of like knowing a little of everything. 😀

And yes, bear and I are still together.

Ooo, bad ass! lol I think my family would fall about laughing at the idea of me being bad ass, Sophie. But hey, back in the day, I was willing to try and do anything as you only get one shot at life, right? 😉

  5. We couldn’t be more different, haha, although I love teddies too and even wanted to have a shop to sell them so many years ago. What a job, what a life, waw! Great info Alex xxx

That’s the fun part about doing these memes, Inge, is finding out about one another. I love that you wanted to have your own shop selling teddies. Now that would be a fun rewarding job.

  6. You have a fascinating history, Alexandra! I hope you enjoyed your visit to the US, too. Oh, and I gave my now adult niece a Gund teddy bear before she was born (it was in her crib). She still sleeps with it

    Really enjoyed your post!

Thanks for stopping by, Jonette, always a delight to see a new face around here. It was fun sharing a little bit about what I’ve got up to in my life. I think we can all surprise, and I love these kind of Memes that allows us to connect better with one another.

Oh, how wonderful that you did that too. I bought one of my nieces a bunny that, 40+ years later, she still has.
