Excuse Me While I’m Niksen …

Well, it had to happen, and the lyrics of the Righteous Brothers song Loving’ Feeling just about sums it it, really.

I’ve lost that lovin’ feelin’
Whoa, lovin’ feelin’
Bring back that lovin’ feeling
‘Cause it’s gone, gone, gone
Whoa, whoa!

At first I thought I was just in a reading slum because of a number of DNF reads that left me, well, questioning my choice in books. So I took a couple of weeks off from reading altogether, which sort of turned into a month and then I went on holiday for the entire month of July and was busy just relaxing doing nothing—which, apparently, the Dutch have a saying for “niksen,” which is the art of doing just that, nothing—and when we weren’t doing niksen we were off out and about enjoying ourselves.

The thing is, I think I’ve either become a full-time practitioner, or an expert at niksen or both!

Either way, I might not be blogging full-time again for a while, because I’m going to be doing a little more niksen in my life.

I think most of us already practise without really knowing staring out the window has a fancy Dutch name. 😉

  2. Haha love it when you talk Dutch! I do think you mean you ‘were’ doing this activity of ‘niksen’ and otherwise you were out and about. In case you don’t know, I also enjoy ‘niksen’ or ‘doing niks’ 😉

It was like indulging in something others might consider naughty, Inge, so it’s nice to know that I’m not the only one doing it.! It seems like I’m in good company. 😉

Well Alexandra I niksen too 😉 I have decided to still blog but maybe not every day of the week like I used to. More like Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday probably. So enjoy your niksen too!

I’m looking at doing something similar, as in blogging when the Muse strikes, rather than setting a target, or blogging daily, as I feel burnt out. Maybe we all need to be ‘niksening’ together, Sophie? 😉

  5. Sometimes you just gotta do what’s right for you. You’ll know when you’re ready to return…or not.

But! Please stay in touch. I love your perspective.

Thanks, Jonetta. I’ll still be visiting people’s blogs and commenting. As I still enjoy reading what others have to say about their passions. I just need to take a step back and find mine, again. 😀

Sometimes you need a break – even from the things you love most in life. Enjoy your ‘niksen’ and hopefully you’ll return to your blog at some point raring to read and write! 😊

Indeed, Paula. Though it isn’t like I haven’t had a nice long break with my partner, this last month. It’s just finding that spark that seems to have evaporated. I think I’ve become to focused on one thing and it started to become a chore rather than a pleasure.

Oh, yes, now you’re talking, Alexandra. Indeed, niksen is good for the soul. I’m happy you’ve discovered this practice.

Ah, of course you would know about niksen, Kenny. I’m sure you too have become an expert of late. And it is a great way to gaining some perspective on life, taking to time to watch the world just ‘happen’ right outside your window.
